IRS is the New Nigger?

78 17

On MSNBC’s Martin Bashir, the show’s namesake decided to make an argument about the Republican’s constant attacks on President Obama concerning the IRS. With stories of overspending, the targeting of conservative groups for further scrutiny, and a few major mistakes being revealed, the GOP is doing everything in its power to link all of this to Barack Obama. So on his TV program, Bashir dropped this nugget on the masses:

“This strategy is nothing new, and it was explained way back in 1981, by Lee Atwater, who was Bush 41’s chief strategist. In a tape recording, Mr. Atwater revealed how Republicans evolved their language to achieve the same purpose. He said you start out in 1954, by saying n word n word n word. By 1968, you can’t say n word. That hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like — forced busing, states rights, and all that stuff and you’re getting so abstract. Now you’re talking about cutting taxes. “We want to cut this” is much more abstract than even the busing thing and a hell of a lot more abstract than n word. So this afternoon, we welcomed the latest phrase in the lexicon on Republican attacks on this president, the IRS, three letters that sound so innocent, but we know what you mean. “

Wait…what?

No, seriously. What?

Mr. Bashir, in his attempt to explain the animosity that’s constantly thrown towards the President, did what’s known in media by the highly technical term “step in it.”

Bashir isn’t the first to point to race as a key issue in Republican opposition to the President. He may be the first to go on national television and imply that the IRS critiques are a 2013 version of Nigger. I’ve spoken out against racist elements in both the Tea Party and within conservatism before–but to levy this type of attack is problematic on a ridiculous scale.  It’s not simply because the situation is a bit more complicated than angry Whites wanting to call the President nigger.

Look at the bigger conversation.

This wasn’t a journalistic attempt at covering a story. This was specifically done to frame an idea and tint the lens in which people are looking at this issue. So if the attempt is to frame the conversation, it implies that Bashir wants some sort of dialogue around it. To claim that by attacking the IRS and questioning the link to the President is a coded racist attack denigrates legitimate critiques on racial issues that’s happened before and that will surely happen in the future. There are many Americans that will hear this argument and immediately become defensive. Are they participating in some sort of racial attack because they had concerns about the IRS issues and wondered was there a possible link to the President? The answer is no. There is a legitimate concern with what’s happening with the IRS. And with little bits of information coming out here and there, there may be concern about how it all played out. So some elected officials with constituents who care may say something.

This isn’t a defense of the shameless grandstanding that some Republicans have done and the visible giddiness in their eyes at the idea that they may have a “thing” that will stick to Obama. They are obstructionist who have claimed a desire to bring jobs to America yet obstruct whenever they can. This still doesn’t mean they’re secretly calling Obama a Nigger.

Mr. Bashir — the battle to highlight issues of race is a big one and allies are desperately needed. But this? This right here? Sir, you are not helping at all.

That thing Bashir said is stupid. There are dozens of things that are ‘secret’ code for ‘I dislike black people’. Complaining about scrutiny from the IRS is not one of them. God.

Roc I explain my thoughts on this in the post fairly clearly. Have I ever posted anything implying that I dont think there’s an issue among some conservatives dealing Obama? That still doesn’t make this argument right or helpful AT ALL.

I’m not a fan of Mr Bashir’s show… generally he doesnt do dialogue around issues like this. I think what he was trying to do was to add the term IRS to what most of us think of as “Dog Whistle”politics…

It was done in a ham handed way… not very effective…

The IRS admitted that they singled out groups that used certain language in their applications. That is a big deal.

They were delayed (some of them for a months and months), while other groups were allowed. You don’t think that is a problem? You don’t see this as a possible politicalization of the IRS? That doesn’t bother you? Or does it not bother you because Obama is president.

    Whuuuuuuuut???

  59. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 2:47 pm

I think the IRS thing is bullshit. I want the IRS to check out whether or not you are politicking with tax payer funds. Most Tea Party groups are – on their face – doing exactly that. It’s not political, no Tea Party groups were denied (when I think they should have been) – and more liberal groups were reviewed than conservative groups AND more liberal groups were denied than conservative groups. This has been in the can for months – it is just another attempt to besmirch the President. I have issues with Obama… he had nothing to do with this AND the IRS was doing the right thing.

Also Bashir is an idiot and MSNBC needs to refresh it’s line up in the worst way… He would be the first I would toss… And yes – Elon would be great!

  60. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 2:47 pm

…and my issues with OBama are nothing extra-ordinary in the sense that he is an elected centrist and I am to the left of him. …knew that when I voted him in – both times.

  61. Kevin Noble Williams Minus June 6, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Why should more tea party groups have been denied?

  62. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Because the purpose of 501c4 is explicitly for “social welfare” and explicit prohibited from politics. The Tea Party – first clue PARTY – is an explicitly political organization focused on defeating/undermining both the old guard GOP and the Democrats. It should not benefit from my tax dollars (by exemption from taxes) nor should it’s donor base be secret IF it is an explicitly partisan political organization or movement. I would say the same thing if of any explicitly left organization running candidates… The Green Party for instance should not benefit from the tax dollars of conservative old ladies in Virginia.

The really important thing about this so called “scandal” is that it is not a scandal at all. Most people knowing the details see it for what it is – a ridiculous attempt – to as Chris Matthews says “put an asterix” next to President Obama in history.

There might be reasons to do that…but so far I haven’t seen an asterix that every other President did not deserve as well….i.e. participating in the military-industrial complex in ways that should be repugnant to us all. But he is in no way – special in that.

  63. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 4:47 pm

By the way – I don’t think any were denied….. though they sure as hell SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

  64. Tony Forward June 6, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Bashir is not going anywhere. He’s doing exactly what he is supposed to do, getting you folk to talk about his point.

I think Bashir is funny as heck!

  65. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 4:47 pm

I know his music crew is… The most ironic thing about this…is the Tea Party early on was formed as a genuine check against tax wasting schemes…. they early on hated the GOP too….then the GOP took it over. The original Tea Party ought to have no proble wiht denying political groups tax exemptions…

  66. Kevin Noble Williams Minus June 6, 2013 at 5:47 pm

” It should not benefit from my tax dollars (by exemption from taxes) nor should it’s donor base be secret IF it is an explicitly partisan political organization or movement.”

Ok fine (if that’s what you believe). Going on that, then scrutiny should be placed on every 501c4 equally. When you have the IRS singling out groups based on key words, it’s wrong. Even more so when they lie about it’s scope and say that it was rouge agents (even though they say otherwise:

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/two-cincinnati-irs-employees-claim-washington-directed-conservative-targeting-according-to-report/

Even when that doesn’t make sense:

    http://www.wafb.com/story/22380127/reality-check-exclusive-cincinnati-agent-giving-orders-in-irs-scandal

And when you have people in the administration who said they didn’t find out about it until recently, even though there were complaints going back months/years:

“At least as early as mid-2011, higher-ranking IRS officials knew that conservative groups primarily were being targeted.[61]
Targeted groups complained to various members of Congress. In response, a congressional committee asked IRS Commissioner Douglas H. Shulman about the allegations in 2012. Shulman told the committee that the agency wasn’t targeting conservative groups.[61] After Shulman denied that the IRS was unfairly targeting conservative groups, the congressional committee ended the investigation. Shulman resigned his post in late 2012, before the scandal came to light.[62]”

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/business/douglas-shulman-head-of-the-internal-revenue-service-to-step-down.html?_r=0

Understand that this would be just as bad if it had happened under a Republican president/administration. But we are dealing with the here and now.

  67. Liz McLellan June 6, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I have no problem with it. At all.

  68. Kevin Noble Williams Minus June 6, 2013 at 5:47 pm

THAT’S ENTIRELY MY POINT. He is no different. He isn’t special. We should be riding him just like people rode Bush. For some reason, no one in the black intelligentsia (outside of maybe Cornell West) will criticize him in any way. That’s a problem.

  69. Steve Bradley June 6, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I agree with Elon, what Bashir did was asshole stupid, not only did he butcher the Atwater quote to make his point, but there’s no correlation…the I.R.S.’s actions are problematic, whether it’s against Conservatives or the N.A.A.C.P. especially with Obama giving them new duties to administrate the new health care law…they should establish another department to administrate the health care law and abolish the I.R.S., that action is long overdue

  70. Kent Strock June 6, 2013 at 5:47 pm

Their names and content were targeted because they were claiming to be social welfare group but are PACs. The rules are unclear on this and open to abuse. Right wing groups particularly tea party people are MUCH more likely to exploit the loopholes. This is also part of the whole FEC not having commissioners because republicans won’t confirm them. Nothing wrong with with Bashir said. THe word can be used when it shows how racists operate. The conservative republicans and tea party people do see Obama as a nigger. No doubt about that. Just because they have been silenced in saying the world doesn’t mean they don’t think it. That is part of the problem in banning the word. They and other good white folk think because they don’t say nigger than they don’t have race problems/issues. Let them use it and we can “call a spade a spade”

  71. Elizabeth V Young June 6, 2013 at 6:47 pm

    Sigh…

  72. Kent Strock June 6, 2013 at 6:47 pm

How about this by way of analogy? The IRS is doing routine checks of businesses and finds out that 8 out of 10 pizza joints have been not paying taxes and cheating. The next step in the investigation is not to start looking at waffle houses or shoe stores…you find other Pizza Joints that have shady dealings.

  73. Kevin Noble Williams Minus June 6, 2013 at 6:47 pm

  75. Henry June 7, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Great article, and I mostly agree with you. My thought is that some people (certainly not everyone) will use every scandal (real, imagined or otherwise) to attack POTUS. Some will do this for racial reasons, others will do for political ones.
