Semper Ignoramus: Iraq War Hero Booed For Supporting Equal Rights

While stories of Vietnam War protestors spitting on returning veterans are largely the stuff of urban legend, this actually happened: Anti-gay protestors booed a United States Marine for speaking out in favor of equality.

He wasn’t just any Marine. Staff Sgt. Eric Fidelis Alva was the first American wounded in Iraq. He lost the lower portion of his right leg to a landmine, but came home to fight for the truest of American principles: The equality of all its citizens. In 2011, he was honored in San Diego for his efforts to overturn Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but just this week, people in his hometown of San Antonio turned on him:

Anti-gay protesters reportedly booed a gay Marine veteran who lost his leg in the Iraq War while he was speaking in favor of a nondiscrimination ordinance at a San Antonio City Council meeting on Wednesday night.

At a prayer vigil outside City Hall before the meeting, about 300 people protested the proposed addition to San Antonio’s nondiscrimination law that would add protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and veteran status.

Alva, a Marine staff sergeant who became the first U.S. soldier injured in Iraq when he stepped on a landmine, was booed by the crowd when he spoke in favor of the ordinance. Alva lives in San Antonio.

“To all you people that preach the word of God, shame on you because God loves me, like the day I laid bleeding on the sands of Iraq and that’s why he saved me,” Alva said before he left the podium.

Look, I understand some people are slow to accept change. Unfortunately, that’s always been a part of America. We’re a work in progress. But you do not boo a goddamned United States Marine who swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, and who sacrificed a goddamn leg in Iraq.

What the hell is the matter with these people? Oh, yeah. They’re bigots.

An evil trial lawyer from Chicago, which makes me almost as bad as Barack Obama himself. Except, I am a Cubs fan, unlike our President, and so, as the kids say, I AM SHAME. I blog about legal issues, politics, sports, music (that long-haired rock 'n roll music all the kids are into), and, frequently, the interaction between any and all of the above. When I'm not busy undermining the Constitution or circumventing your freedoms, I run, watch too much sports on the teevee, and hang out with my long-suffering wife and three kids.

I’m with the sarge, right up to the “loving GOD” part. But, that aside, he’s got more balls than that crowd could ever have.

I too concur with Sgt. Alva.

The proposed law is bad, but booing a man with a valid opinion is worse and booing a decorated Marine is the bottom of the barrel. They are bigots and he is more of a man than they will ever be.
